Garage doors can get off of their track for various reasons.

Time weakens the tracks, but the durability of the parts can last up to decades.

Some of the reasons why garage doors go off track have a simple fix.

However, other problems require the service of a professional.

The tracks are what keeps the door in its place.

When the door comes off its tracks, there’s unequal pressure and tension throughout the garage door and its mechanical parts.

Which is why at the start of the door showing sign of it being off track, we advise calling for a garage door repair professional.

Common Reasons for Garage Doors to Go Off Track

    Car bump

The car packs quite a horsepower so that a bump can leave devastating effects on your garage door.

When the car bumps into your garage door, there is a domino effect that takes place.

Cars hitting the garage door is a common scenario that causes the door to go off its track.

The first to take the hit is the garage door itself.

Then the force causes the roller bearings to be pushed off of the tracks, distorting the tracks in the process.

After that, the pulleys and axles holding the cables that keep the door in place now hold different amounts of tension that may cause the cables to spool into the floor.

Either that or it will snap in two.

Even if you don’t see any problems at first glance when you check the scene, it is best to have a second opinion.

    You may have missed something.

    Broken Pulley and Axel

The Pulleys and Axels hold the cables in place.

There are times when built-up debris causes tension on the pulleys and axel.

You should also consider time, as these parts of the door don’t often get updated like the rest of the garage door.

Broken pulleys and axel need to be replaced.

The cables are what keeps the door in its place.

When the cables snap into two, the problem ends with the tension on the door as it is not held together at the same force.

It will be off its track, and it can lead to it crashing down on anything beneath it.

The cables will need total replacement.

However, if the problem is a simple cable out of its spool, it will need to be put back in its place with a few tune-ups.

You will still need the assistance of a professional.

It will require dismantling the pulleys and axel that hold the cable in its place.

    Broken Torsion Spring

The torsion spring is a complicated spring that allows you to operate the door.

The torsion spring contracts and coils around a  torsion shaft as the door stretches to open.

When your door refuses to close, and you see that it is off its track, the problem may be because of a broken torsion spring.

This spring type is nearly discouraged for DIY projects as it is more complicated than its counterpart, the extension spring.

There is no way to put a broken torsion spring back together.

Both springs need to be replaced for the door to start with equal tension.

    Roller Bearings

The roller bearings essentially roll on the tracks.

The simple function can lead to it to dry out due to constant friction, with the weather taken into consideration.

When roller bearings are dry, lubricating it with silicone or lithium-based grease does the trick easily.

However, a broken roller bearing is a different matter.

Broken roller bearings need to be replaced, and not by inexperienced hands.

Especially for vertical tracks, some wirings can cause electrocution, and the garage door is a safety hazard in itself.
